About this course

Everyday Empathy At Work, In Leadership, And Career Growth

A colleague has been off their game for three weeks. You have noticed. You have not said anything, because you do not know what to say that would not come out awkward or intrusive — so you say nothing, and the distance grows. Most people at work are in that position regularly. In the course Everyday Empathy at Work you learn what to look for, what to say, and where the line sits between supporting someone and taking on their problem.

Empathy is usually treated as a trait you either have or lack. It is much closer to a practical skill with recognisable moves: specific phrases, specific questions, specific things to notice. This course teaches those moves.

Why empathy is a leadership skill, not a nice-to-have

Teams where people feel understood raise the difficult thing earlier, admit mistakes sooner, and stay longer. Teams where they do not lose their best people quietly and expensively, usually to a manager somewhere else who asked one more question. The research on this is not ambiguous, and the course goes directly to what Catalyst and Ernst & Young found when they measured it.

The mistake in the other direction matters just as much. Empathy without follow-through is theatre, empathy without boundaries burns you out, and some people will take advantage of it. Doing this well means knowing when to lean in and when not to.

What you learn in this course

Six sections take you from what empathy actually is — including where it differs from sympathy and compassion — through the mindsets and phrases that make it visible, into leadership and meetings, then into the hardest situations at work, and finally into listening and into sales and client relationships.

Across the course you learn to:

  • Distinguish empathy, sympathy and compassion, and use cognitive and emotional empathy deliberately rather than by instinct
  • Understand the neuroscience behind empathy, including Allan Schore’s work on right-brain connection
  • Recognise the bad side of too much empathy, and hold a boundary with people who take advantage of it
  • Use compassionate phrases and empathetic conversation starters that show understanding without sounding scripted
  • Lead empathetically with real follow-through, so that support translates into something actually changing
  • Bring empathetic language into meetings, which is where most of it is normally missing
  • Respond to grief, loss and bereavement at work, including what to say and what practical support looks like
  • Spot the signs of hardship in colleagues before they escalate, and adapt to how different people learn and what they need
  • Hold people accountable without ever blaming aggressively
  • Apply core listening skills: the cycle of listening and acknowledging, non-verbal cues, and taking feedback properly
  • Use empathy in sales and client work — asking real questions of leads, creating shared emotion, and reading non-verbal signals in a pitch

The Catalyst study and Ernst & Young’s research give you the evidence to make the case internally, and a checklist of empathy steps gives you something concrete to work from on an ordinary Tuesday.

How the course works

Around forty-five short video lessons across six sections, all online in the Soofos learning environment, at your own pace. Your instructor is Alex Genadinik, who has taught business and communication skills online for more than a decade and takes a practical, results-focused approach: usable phrases, realistic workplace scenes, and research where it earns its place.

No background in psychology is needed. Everything is explained from the ground up and immediately attached to a situation you would recognise from your own week.

Who is this course for?

  • Managers and team leads responsible for how people are doing, not only for what they deliver
  • Aspiring leaders who want the interpersonal half of the job before they need it
  • Customer-facing and support teams who absorb other people’s frustration daily
  • Salespeople and account managers who build long relationships rather than single transactions
  • HR professionals, and anyone who is the person colleagues quietly come to

The skills transfer directly outside work, without much translation. Most people find they use them at home before they use them in a meeting.
