About this course

Discover Nature

Do you ever look out your window and see only pavement, traffic, and grey? Maybe you have a tree in your street, a patch of grass, a row of hedges, and a bench where a robin sings every morning. You might be surprised to learn that nature is already woven into your street, your park, your balcony, and that it is doing far more for you than you realise. In the course Discover Nature you learn to see, understand, and enjoy the nature that already lives with you, from the photosynthesis happening in a single tree to the wildlife that has quietly moved into European cities.

Why urban nature matters more than ever

Cities are not the opposite of nature. They are nature, reorganised. Every street tree filters air, cools the block in summer, and feeds a hidden web of insects, birds, and fungi. When we lose sight of these connections, we lose the motivation to protect them. A city that sees its greenery as mere decoration will pave it over. A city that understands its greenery as infrastructure, as a living system that regulates temperature, cleans water, and supports its own wildlife, will invest in it. Understanding what nature does for you, and what you do for nature, is the foundation for a calmer, healthier, and more alive urban life. And the evidence is not abstract: studies from the Netherlands, the UK, and Germany show that people who spend time in green spaces report lower stress, better sleep, and a stronger sense of wellbeing.

What you will learn

You will move through three movements: what nature does, meeting it where you live, and giving something back. Each unit builds on the last, so that by the end you can explain the science, spot the wildlife, and act on the evidence. Along the way you will:

  • Explain the four families of ecosystem services and how your street uses them every day
  • Describe the photosynthesis equation and trace carbon from air into wood
  • Map a food web around a single tree, naming producers, consumers, and decomposers
  • Follow the water and nitrogen cycles through soil, roots, and rain
  • Identify the wildlife of European cities, from peregrines to hedgehogs to urban foxes
  • Summarise the health evidence linking green surroundings to shorter hospital stays, lower stress, and restored attention
  • Apply small, repeatable actions, composting, flowering balconies, hedgehog highways, that make your street greener and more alive

How the course works

One street tree anchors every lesson. You will adopt a tree or green spot near your home and return to it in each unit, watching how the same trunk connects to oxygen, to birdsong, to your own health. The tree is your constant companion: a provider of services, a node in a food web, a carbon sink, a cooling island, a perch for a sparrow. Assignments are small and doable: a ten-minute observation at dawn, a photo of a decomposer, a note on what your adopted tree did for you this week. No biology background is needed. Each lesson names its sources, NOAA, IPBES, the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment, the University of Exeter, so you can trust the science and share it with friends, neighbours, or your local council. The course is delivered online in the Soofos learning environment, so you can learn at your own pace, from your kitchen table or your balcony.

For whom is this course designed?

  • Curious commuters who want to see their daily route differently
  • Balcony gardeners who wonder what their plants actually do
  • Parents and grandparents looking for a calm, science-based way to reconnect with the outdoors
  • Neighbours and community groups who want to make their street a little wilder
  • Anyone in a European city who feels that nature is “somewhere else” and wants to find it closer to home

This course is for adults across Europe with no biology background. If you have ever felt a pang of wonder at a bird landing on your windowsill, or paused to watch a fox cross the park at dusk, this is for you.

Discover Nature is an online course in the Soofos learning environment. Each unit is short, self-paced, and built around one recurring street tree, so you can learn while you walk, sit on your balcony, or pause at your adopted green spot. No field trip required. No microscope. Just your eyes, your street, and a few small actions that add up.
